The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, built in 1895, is the major museum for modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. The Stedelijk Museum reopened on September 23rd 2012 after an intensive renovation and expansion project. With the addition of a futuristic new wing, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects, the Stedelijk has more space than ever to show its renowned collection and outstanding exhibitions.
Consisting of more than 90,000 objects that date from 1850 to the present, the collection includes iconic works by Karel Appel, Wassily Kandinsky, Willem de Kooning, Jeff Koons, Kazimir Malevich, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondriaan, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and many others. The Stedelijk’s renowned collection of industrial design, graphic design, and applied arts features work of designers such as Joseph Hoffmann, Gerrit Rietveld, and Ettore Sottsass. And the collection continues to grow with current masterpieces by artists as Francis Alÿs, Maarten Baas, Barbara Bloom, Rineke Dijkstra, Marlene Dumas, and Wolfgang Tillmans.
The Stedelijk’s new restaurant with terrace is open every day for delicious lunches and dinners. In the museum shop you can find a great selection of books about modern and contemporary art, as well as design products, presents and souvenirs. The restaurant and the shop are accessible without museum admission ticket. Every Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, the Stedelijk presents a multi-disciplinary public program with internationally acclaimed speakers and artists.
