Descripción de la Organización

About Founded in 2005 by artists Paul Middendorf and Page Saez, galleryHOMELAND fosters cutting edge and challenging concepts in contemporary art. Focusing primarily on emerging and mid-career visual artists, the gallery’s programming includes a monthly exhibition schedule, an artist residence, and an international programming series involving opening temporary gallery spaces in leading contemporary art communities. At the end of 2007, galleryHOMELAND opened a large new exhibition space at the Ford Building in the SE on Division Street and 11th Avenue. Artists and groups based both in and outside the region use several thousand square feet of active project space for the creation and exhibition of innovative works. As part of the Central Eastside Arts District, the gallery is connected to a thriving art community that has formed between the industrial corridor and residential districts of the SE. Newly renovated, the Ford Building is currently home to over 50 creative professional artists, companies, and organizations. In September of 2009 galleryHOMELAND, in collaboration with Dam, Stuhltrager Gallery, opened the EAST/WEST Project for the first time in Berlin, Germany. EAST/WEST Project was a nonprofit initiative that encouraged cultural exchange by establishing a short term project space abroad for international artists to share, develop and progress contemporary ideas. NOW GH IS SPACE HL! galleryHOMELAND reopening and rebranding! This November galleryHOMELAND takes ownership of its new Headquarters located at the heart of Houston’s 2nd Ward and East End. Executive Director Paul Middendorf has been brought on full time by The galleryHOMELAND board and the organization has signed a 6 year lease on its new building. After a long hiatus of a permanent location gH reopens and rebrands as Space HL! From Then to Now galleryHOMELAND started as a grassroots organization and non profit in Portland Oregon in 2005 and opened a second location in Houston Texas in 2012. Working vigorously across the country and after 10 years gH closed its Portland branch and made its HQ and home solely in Houston TX. Now galleryHOMELAND is growing once again. What was once a small experimental exhibitions and events space has become so much more and has expanded on its vision more than ever. galleryHOMELAND now becomes Space HL! Space HL – Same organization Same grand Vision! From civic involvement and social engagement galleryHOMELAND has worked on new projects and initiatives locally, nationally and internationally. As Space HL and with its new location in Houston’s East Side, we have opened a second location, annex, and creative incubator. The annex is in Partnership with the organization Swale run by NYC artist Mary Mattingly and group project Swale on the Historic Governors Island in NYC. With this new bold move and cultural exchange we will be hosting and featuring visiting artists Bret Shirley for the Fall, Winter, and Spring. Back in Houston Space HL opens its doors to a new season of programming and bold events with such experimental projects as Dallas based installation team Jeff Gibbons and Greg Ruppe and local composer and avante garde performer Lynn Lane and his project Transitory Sound and Movement Collective. End of November Space HL brings back it culinary and famed Chef event Scratch, making its elevated take on the traditional “bake sale”. The popular event happens the Sunday before Thanksgiving and features executive chefs from around the city. Space HL ends the month on November 30th with its lavish membership dinner and VIP event giving members and participants an exclusive look at its new programming and vision. That’s not all! Space HL continues its celebrated events like artists funding event Sunday Soup, experimental music series, and will be participating in a Spring project in collaboration with Gabriel Martinez and the Smithsonian Museum featuring Latino Artists across the region and beyond. Space HL opens its doors in November with new project by Jeff Gibbons and Greg Ruppe and will have its grand opening group show in December. Stay tuned for more. We are back and more dedicated than ever.
