History
Founders and artists, Willard “Bill” W. Cummings (1915–1975), Charles Cutler (1914-1970), Sidney Simon (1917-1997), and Henry Varnum Poor (1888-1971), established Skowhegan in 1946 on the Cummings' family farm in rural Maine.
Vision Statement
Neither a school in the traditional sense nor a retreat, Skowhegan's nine-week summer program provides 65 emerging artists and 11 faculty artists with a collaborative and rigorous environment that is shaped by risk-taking, mentorship, and peer-to-peer exchange. Skowhegan does not consider financial ability or circumstances in its admissions process and, instead, focuses on an individual’s commitment to artmaking and inquiry.
Campus
Skowhegan occupies a 350-acres campus located in Somerset County, Maine. In addition to open fields, old growth forests, and rolling hills, the campus is set along the shores of Wesserunsett Lake.
Facilities
Upper Campus: Each participant receives a private work space within a communal studio building, many of which are repurposed farm buildings. Program buildings include: the recently constructed Frank Moore Studio and Helen Frankenthaler Studio; the Old Dominion Fresco Barn where lectures are held and houses the Fresco Shop where the buon fresco technique is still taught; the Sidney Simon Sculpture Yard which includes the Acquavella Sculpture Shop for artmaking with a variety of materials, tools, and at any scale, the Moffett/Gober Sculpture Pavilion, and the Pollock-Krasner Ceramics Studio; the Double Bett(y)(e) Media Lab for digital video, sound, and image editing; the Robert Lehman Library housing a collection of 14,000+ books on art and artists, and 600+ recordings of lectures given on campus by Skowhegan's faculty since 1952; and Red Farm, the 1789 farm house previously owned by the Cummings Family, where events and social gatherings take place.
Lower Campus: Artists, including faculty and staff, live in summer cottages alongside Wesserunsett Lake, many of which were converted from single family homes. The lower campus includes a new participant house, the David C. Driskell House, and the Gund Dining Hall which is a reconstruction o Skowhegan’s iconic dining hall.
Two campus additions are anticipated for 2023-24: The Flex Space designed by OPAL Architecture of Belfast, ME; and a series of Natural Amphitheater Spaces designed by Hood Design Studio of Oakland, CA. Both the Flex Space and the Amphitheater spaces are envisioned to supplement existing object-based studio facilities, allowing for innovations in performance, dance, movement, and new genres.
*A separate list of additional buildings is available upon request.
Leadership
Skowhegan's governance structure is divided into a Board of Trustees and a Board of Governors. Eleanor Acquavella is Chair, Board of Trustees and Paula Volent is President. Marlene McCarty, Suzanne McClelland, and Alix Pearlstein are Co-Chairs for the Board of Governors, which is comprised of professional working artists, each of who have been at Skowhegan as participants and/or faculty.
