THE INTESA SANPAOLO COMMITMENT TO CULTURE AND ART
The Culture Project of Intesa Sanpaolo is a multi-year plan of initiatives in Italy through which the bank expresses its commitment to the promotion of art and culture. At the Gallerie d'Italia, the four museums of Intesa Sanpaolo, a selection is presented from the over 35,000 works belonging to the Group's art heritage, spanning from archaeology to contemporary art. At the Gallerie d'Italia-Milano, the collections from the Bank's nineteenth century and the Fondazione Cariplo are showcased in the "From Canova to Boccioni” path, along with a selection of works from the twentieth-century collections. The Gallerie d'Italia-Napoli features Caravaggio's masterpiece, Il Martirio di Sant’Orsola (The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula), along with works from the Southern Italian region spanning the seventeenth century to the early twentieth century, the Bank’s collection of Attic and Magna Graecia ceramics, and a group of masterpieces from the second half of the twentieth century. The Gallerie d'Italia-Vicenza highlights Venetian paintings of the eighteenth century and the collection of Russian icons, acknowledged to be one of the largest in the world. The Gallerie d'Italia-Torino, primarily dedicated to photography, image, and the digital world, along with the Publifoto Intesa Sanpaolo Archive featuring over seven million photographs from the 1930s to the 1990s, displays an important collection of works and furnishings from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, including nine seventeenth-century canvases from the Oratory of the Compagnia di San Paolo. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the Intesa Sanpaolo Gallerie d'Italia museums offer temporary exhibitions based on innovative scientific projects, realised also through loans and exchanges with major national and international museum institutions. A leading bank in Italy and one of the most prominent financial institutions in Europe, Intesa Sanpaolo has gained international trust and reputation as an active cultural player. In recent years, in addition to its museums in Milan, Naples, Turin and Vicenza, the Galleria di Palazzo degli Alberti in Prato, and the Casa Museo dell' Antiquariato Ivan Bruschi in Arezzo, Tuscany have also become part of Intesa Sanpaolo's heritage.
Furthermore, most of the exhibitions held recently at the Intesa Sanpaolo Gallerie d’Italia museums have been realised in close partnership with the most excellent museums, collections and cultural institutions in Europe and abroad, such as the National Gallery, London, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, the Gemäldegalerie - Staatliche Museen, Berlin, the Musée du Louvre, the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, National Gallery of Art, Washington, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, the Musée Condé in Chantilly, the Capodimonte Museum, Naples, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and The Palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau.
In the last years, Intesa Sanpaolo has also loaned and exchanged masterpieces with the most relevant museums and cultural institutions in the world such as the Metropolitan Museum New York, the Estorick Collection in London, and the National Gallery, London.
For over 30 years, the Restituzioni program has overseen and supported the restoration of works from the Italian cultural heritage identified in collaboration with ministerial protection bodies out of the Intesa Sanpaolo collection. The project is now at its twentieth edition, having enabled the recovery of over 2,000 masterpieces of the country's art.
Aside from its own cultural activity, Intesa Sanpaolo is deeply committed to supporting cultural associations, institutions, exhibitions and initiatives in Italy and abroad. Through an innovative programme of partnerships and collaborations, Intesa Sanpaolo aims at offering concrete support to cultural workers, and particularly to young generations operating in the field.
Intesa Sanpaolo actively contributes to a number of different cultural initiatives, social activities and sport events, including the contemporary art fair in Turin, Artissima, the contemporary art fair in Milan, MiArt, the Salone Internazionale del Libro di Torino (first and largest fair of Italian publishing), the Nitto ATP finals and many more. Other partnerships and sponsorships include the Teatro La Scala, the Ellen Mac Arthur Foundation, the National Geographic, Leica Camera and others.
The Historical Archive preserves ancient documents that shine light not only on the history of the Group but also of the whole country. Unfolding through over 20 kilometres, these documents - made of papers, photographs, objects and videos - range from the 14th century to the present day. Hence, this Archive represents not only the historical memory of the Intesa Sanpaolo company, but also a collective cultural asset of great value: its contents range from the history of the economy, finance and the business world, including at an international level, to political, social and labour history; there is a wealth of evidence on lending and charitable initiatives in individual territories, the history of town planning, architecture, art, literature and publishing. In particular, the photographic section acquires, catalogues and enhances the banks' photographic fonds (over 300,000 photographs in continuous growth), donations from private individuals and, since the end of 2017, the Publifoto Archive. The oldest document is parchment dating back to 1472.
The Gallerie d'Italia Academy, with the Advanced Training Course in "Management of artistic-cultural heritage and corporate collections" dedicates specialised initiatives to young people, considering the occupational-economic value of professions related to the world of art and culture.
In the publishing and music sector, collections dedicated to artistic assets, historic buildings of the Bank, art collections for children, and publications of a historical, economic, documentary, artistic, and architectural nature are created. In the musical field, in addition to the multimedia project Vox Imago for the dissemination of knowledge of opera, concert seasons are supported to promote knowledge of ancient, classical, and contemporary repertoires, as well as training programs for young performers and the future audience.
At Intesa Sanpaolo more than one hundred people work in the Art and culture department, headed by the Executive Director Michele Coppola - among them art historians, art critics, guides, experts. A scientific committee sets the direction and plans the activity of the Progetto Cultura.
