Tyler Blackwell is a writer and curator from Fort Worth, Texas. He is currently the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Curatorial Fellow at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston. Blackwell has previously held positions at the Smart Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
His writing has been published in exhibition catalogues for The Art Institute of Chicago, the Smart Museum of Art, and the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels.
His research investigates global narratives of post-1960s abstract painting, postcolonial theory, anthropological and ethnographic methodologies, queer aesthetics, new media theory, representation in public art museum collections, art repatriation and restitution, internet and desktop aesthetics, documentary film, and post-Pictures Generation photography.
Blackwell’s exhibitions and projects have been written about in Hyperallergic, Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, VICE, TimeOut, Chicago magazine, Glasstire, Chicago Reader, Visual Art Source, Bad at Sports, and Temporary Art Review, among others.
Blackwell holds a MA in Art History and the Humanities from the University of Chicago.
