Lives and works in Lisbon.
Her works address the dialectic between history and memory, questioning visibility and audibility regimes, with a special focus on archives. Her work in this area includes: Natureza Morta (2005), 48 (2009), Natureza Morta|Stilleben (3 screen installation, 2010) and Fordlândia Malaise (2019). Sousa Dias was awarded the Cinéma du réel Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Award at Dok Leipzig (both in 2010), amongst others.
Her work has also been exhibited in artistic and cinema contexts, such as: Berlinale; Documenta 14; IDFA – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam; BAFICI Film Festival, Lima, Peru; Harvard Film Archive, Cambridge, MA, USA; Arsenal Institut for film and video art, Berlin; MNAA – Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and MNAC – Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea, both in Lisbon; PhotoEspaña, Madrid, amongst others.
Sousa Dias founded, in 2012, a women’s collective which directed two editions of the Doclisboa Festival, introducing sections such as Cinema de Urgência and Passagens (Documentary and Contemporary Art). She was the recipient of a fellowship for the Flaherty Seminar, New York (2012), delivered a Les Blank Lecture at the Berkeley Art Museum in 2019, and received a MacDowell Fellowship in 2021.
Sousa Dias is a Doctor of Fine Arts (Audiovisual) and teaches at Universidade de Lisboa.
