Sònia Villegas is currently general Coordinator of the Artistic Area of the Fundació Joan Miró-CEAC de Barcelona. Until 2018 she has worked as Curator of the Fundació and Coordinator of the Càtedra Miró and the International Miró Research Group. Prior to this (until 2009), she was Chief Curator of the Museu Picasso de Barcelona for fifteen years, where she was responsible for programming, collections and research, as well as coordinating temporary exhibitions, both national and international. In addition, she has been Director of the Fundació Canònica privada Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Poblet.
She has a Degree in History of Art from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, a Master’s Degree in Cultural Management from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB-Fundació Bosch i Gimpera), and a Doctorate in History of Art from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). She also has an Advanced Degree in Music from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu de Barcelona.
She has curated art exhibitions for a variety of institutions –the exhibition Jean Dubuffet at the Galeria Marc Domènech, winner of the ACCA 2015 prize, among others–, and, for five years, was a lecturer on the Master’s in Management of Cultural Institutions at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC). She has written numerous articles about art, in particular about the work of Pablo Picasso and his contemporaries, for books, exhibition catalogues, magazines and specialist publications.
She is a member of ICOM (International Council of Museums), ICEE (International Committee for Exhibition Exchange) and CIMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art).
