Sarah Walker Schroth, Ph.D. | Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans Director
Sarah Schroth was named Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans Director of the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in June 2013. Formerly, she served as Nancy Hanks Senior Curator at the Nasher, organizing exhibitions and helping to shape the new museum as a cornerstone of the arts at Duke.
Schroth has curated numerous exhibitions ranging from old masters to contemporary art, including the award-winning 2008 exhibition, El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III. As a result of that exhibition, which she organized with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Schroth was named knight-commander in the Order of Isabel la Católica by King Juan Carlos I of Spain. She also has collaborated on major exhibitions with the Museo del Prado, the Seattle Art Museum and others, and has published widely.
On campus, Schroth is a member of Duke’s Council on the Arts, co-convener of the Fulfilment and Purpose working group of the Healthy Campus Initiative, and past member of the Julian Abele Committee. She chairs the Duke President's Art Advisory Committee and the Nasher Museum’s Faculty Advisory Committee. An adjunct professor in Duke’s Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Schroth’s teaching interests include patronage studies, Spanish art and museum theory and practice.
Schroth has worked closely with numerous Duke faculty to help shape their guest-curated exhibitions at the Nasher, including Patricia Leighten for Light Sensitive: Photographic Work from North Carolina Collections (2013), Richard Powell for Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014), and Kristine Stiles for Rauschenberg’s Legacy (2014), which Schroth also co-curated. She is working with Esther Gabara on the planned exhibition Pop América: 1965-1975 (2019). She also was the coordinating curator with faculty guest curator Mark Antliff for The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York, 1914-18 (2010).
Schroth is passionate about supporting and advancing the arts in Durham and the Triangle. In honor of the Nasher Museum’s 10th anniversary, the museum commissioned artist Odili Donald Odita to paint a mural on the Downtown Durham YMCA building. She serves as juror for local art festivals and gallery shows, including The Fence 2017 and the Hillsborough Gallery of Art. She is a member of the Durham Arts Council’s SmART Vision Plan team, selecting public art for downtown Durham. At the Nasher, Sarah’s leadership has been key in starting and growing programs that serve new populations, including the Nasher Teens and Reflections: The Nasher Museum Alzheimer’s Program.
Schroth earned her Ph.D. from The Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, specializing in Spanish art of the 17th century. She has been with Duke since 1995, when she joined the Duke University Museum of Art ? as it was then called ? as curator. Before coming to Duke, she held curatorial positions at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth, Texas; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; and the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
