Descripción del Artista

Through my work I create poetic channels of communication, bringing light to issues related to land occupation and their political, social and cultural results. Reconfiguring what is given a priori, I propose visual mappings where poetry and politics are given a new meaning. Borders and migration, colonisation and the devastation of nature, are just some of the topics I’ve explored for well over a decade. To produce my work I use different media including drawing, photography, sculpture, site-specific interventions, sound and video, chosen specifically to meet the requirements of each project. Recently, the majority of my work has been based upon research pertaining to the devastation of ecosystems and their socio-economic consequences. Since 2012 I’ve been traveling regularly to the Amazon, learning from local peoples and scientists from INPA (National Institute for Amazonian Research, in Manaus) in an investigation about land occupation, deforestation and the depletion of local rivers. I’ve done works related to illegal timber extraction and farming, illegal gold prospecting and the construction of hydroelectric power plants such as Balbina in the state of Amazonas, and Belo Monte, in Para, responsible for flooding large areas of forest, for the complete alteration of river courses and systems, and the dislocation of traditional communities who lost their land, their history and their dignity. Amid so much disaster, it is surprising to find true pieces of resistance, in nature and in local communities. People that for centuries have lived in harmony with the environment, developing an agro-ecological system that makes them independent from the establishment, or groups of indigenous people who despite all the western interference have managed to keep their languages alive. The intersection of art and science is central to my practice as an artist. To take scientific research beyond the academic circles, in a poetic manner, makes it accessible to a larger audience, increasing the understanding of the dynamics of the world.
