Descripción del Artista

I studied photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent (Belgium) and graduated in 1997. For the next ten years I worked as a photojournalist, making reportages in the Balkans and the Middle East. After 10 years of freelancing for the media, I decided to rethink my photographic approach. I left for a one year trip through the former Soviet Union in 2006. I focused on the traces of the communist past and on new tendencies that emerged after the fall of the USSR. The result was ‘Red Journey’, my first book (Lannoo, 2009). ‘Red Journey’ was a turning point in my photographic activity. The photojournalist in me had evolved into a documentary photographer. In that same period I started to teach documentary photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent (B). In 2011, my second book, ‘Traditions’, about traditions in Flanders was published. A year earlier I had initiated ‘Mediterranean. The Continuity of Man’, a longterm documentary project about the Mediterranean countries. It focuses on contemporary issues such as migration, urbanization, tourism, crisis and conflict. In 2014, after more than 20 trips to the region and one and a half year of travelling, this project was launched at the Museum of Photography in Antwerp. A book with the same title was published by Hannibal Publishers. I exhibited at Thessaloniki Biennial for Contemporary Art, Bozar Centre for Fine Arts (Brussels), Flanders Center (Osaka, Japan), Breda Photo (Breda, NL), Visa pour l’Image (Perpignan), Kaunas Photo (Lithuania), Biennale Internationale de l’Image (Nancy, France), Museum of Photography (Antwerp), amongst others. In 2009 and 2013 I was awarded the Nikon Press Photo Award in Belgium.
