Descripción del Artista
Miguel Moreira e Silva was born in 1967 in Alenquer. He lives and develops his artistic work in Bragança, Portugal. Graduated in Animation and Artistic Production, he has been working as an artist since 1992 and he is a resident artist at History and Art gallery and Iberian Mask and Costume Museum in the same city, since 2007.
From an early age, he has been using both painting and sculpture to express himself, exploring along the way a great diversity of materials and techniques, such as engraving, printing and, more recently, assemblage. In his canvases, the chromatic contrast leads the representation of the human figure that reflects different typologies of totalitarian propaganda and invokes a religiosity in a sort of Mannerist style, which is sometimes decontextualized, deconstructed and aesthetically recreated.
The assemblage is a recurring technique in Miguel Silva 's artistic practice that allows him to explore the eclecticism, contradiction, and conflict of the elements that he incorporates into it, in an attitude free of categorizations. His works comprise personal narratives, memories, visual journals where the plasticity of objects and the symbolic load of the forms show the lexical value of the artwork.
The traditional Iberian masks intersected his artistic journey in the early 90s, deriving from a fantastic imagery, which is explicitly manifested throughout his work. Miguel Silva ‘s reinterpretation of the culture of Tras-os-Montes and ancient pagan rituals make his masks unique, merging various influences from the Maori aesthetic to the Japanese Hannya.
