Michael Wellen is Curator of International Art at the Tate Modern with a specific focus on further developing the representation of art from Latin America in Tate’s collection and its exhibition programme.
Since 2011, Michael has been Assistant Curator of Latin American and Latino Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston where he has worked with Dr Mari Carmen Ramírez on exhibitions, acquisitions, research and a variety of publications related to the MFAH Latin American Art Department. Over the past five years he has co-organised many acclaimed exhibitions including Antonio Berni: Juanitoand Ramona and, most recently, Contingent Beauty: Contemporary Art from Latin America. Prior to this Michael spent five years as a researcher and writer with the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas. He has also been a visiting lecturer at Rice University where he designed and taught the seminar Latin American Art and Film Since 1960.
Michael holds a BA in History and Anthropology from Rutgers University and an MA and PhD in Modern and Contemporary Art with a focus on Latin America, both from the University of Texas at Austin.
