Melody Capote joined the staff of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute in 1984 as development associate. She was charged with the task of creating a capital campaign for the completion of their brownstone on West 58th Street in Manhattan, which was completed successfully.
She continued her work in the area of development with the task of identifying, expanding and securing private sector funding for the organization. As a result she has created and established long-term relationships for CCCADI with the private philanthropic sector with such partners as the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Hearst Foundation, New York Community Trust, Time Warner and Con Edison.
Additionally, Melody plays a vital role in government affairs assuring that the Center is ideally positioned for city and state funding for both programmatic and capital support. In her role as external affairs director, she has served as community affairs representative encouraging collaborations with local organizations like Loiza Festival/El Barrio, Lincoln Center, Studio Museum, Bronx Museum, the Apollo, Summer Stage, Roberto Clemente State Park and others.
She is a graduate of the City College of New York and has received various certifications throughout her tenure including a fellowship in the Tennenbaum Leadership Institute at the New School, and Columbia University’s Not-for-Profit Executive Management Certification. She is married to Heriberto Capote and has two children, Jovan and Kailani.
