Since 1995, Martin Barnes is Senior Curator of Photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, (V&A) London. The V&A houses the national collection of the art of photography in the UK.
He has curated numerous touring exhibitions and was the V&A curator for the exhibitions Diane Arbus Revelations (2005-6); Captain Linnaeus Tripe: Photographer of India and Burma 1852-1860 (2015), Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography (2010) and Beneath the Surface, for Photo London, Somerset House (2015). Martin is currently working on exhibitions of photographs by Richard Learoyd and Paul Strand.
Martin’s many publications include: Benjamin Brecknell Turner: Rural England through a Victorian Lens, (2001); Illumine: Photographs by Garry Fabian Miller (2005); Twilight: Photography in the Magic Hour (2006); Shadow Catchers: Camera-less Photography (2010, revised and expanded 2012) Horst: Patterns from Nature (2015) and Richard Learoyd: Day for Night, (2015).
He is a judge of numerous photography awards including the Prix Pictet; member of the UK Committee of National Photographic Collections; member of the vetting committee of the Frieze Art Fair, London; and recipient of the Royal Photographic Society J Dudley Johnston Award in recognition of ‘major achievements in the field of photographic criticism and the history of photography’.
