Marieluise Hessel Artzt was born in Munich, Germany. She lived for many years in Mexico before moving to the United States and becoming a citizen. She is married to Edwin L. Artzt, Retired Chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble. Marieluise has been a collector of contemporary art since the late 1960's. The wide-ranging collection, which continues to grow, consists of over 2,000 works and is housed at the Center for Curatorial Studies and the Hessel Museum, located at Bard College (CCS Bard). CCS Bard, which Marieluise co-founded in 1992, is an international research center dedicated to the study of late 20th and 21st century art, curatorial practice, and contemporary culture. It offers a unique graduate program at the Master's Degree level in curatorial practice, the study of museum activities, exhibitions, art criticism, and the interpretation of art. The Marieluise Hessel Collection is available to these students, as well as scholars and visiting curators. In 2006, CCS Bard inaugurated the Hessel Museum of Art with a major expansion of the galleries and the Center’s exhibition and public programs. Marieluise also established the Library and Archives at CCS Bard. The library contains 30,000 volumes including international exhibition catalogs, artists’ monographs, international art periodicals, and Special Collections. The Center’s Archives document the institutional history of CCS Bard and the Hessel Museum as well as serving as the repository for the archives of select galleries, art spaces, and initiatives, and the personal papers of significant contemporary art curators. Current additional activities include service at the following: the Board of Trustees of Bard College the Board of Directors of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College the Executive Committee of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art the Women’s Roundtable of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Former board and committee activities include service at the following: the American Institute of Contemporary German Studies, Executive Committee the Mexican Cultural Institute, Board of Directors the World Monuments Fund, Trustee & Executive Committee the New School School for Social Research, Vera List Center for Art and Politics, Advisory Committee
