Mariana Tengner Barros is a choreographer and performer based in Almada, Portugal. Her work has been presented in several countries in Europe and South America.
She created and performed Piece of the Heart (a solo with ‘backing dancers’, 2008); And So?…The End (2010); Après le bain (2011), At Once (2011, as part of the Deborah Hay’s “Solo Performance Commissioning Project” in Findhorn, Scotland, 2009), The Trap (2011 Winner of the Prix Jardin D’Europe Audience Award, Vienna), Piece of the Heart : for him, a new fragrance by Mariana Tengner Barros (2012), A Power Ballad (2013) & Resurrection (2017) co-creations with the north-american choreographer Mark Tompkins, THE WEATHER™ (2016) and EXI(s)T(s) (2018).
Since 2013 she has teamed up with musician Jonny Kadaver creating different format dances/performances with live music. They regularly collaborate with Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte having created the group piece End of Transmission (2014), the solo MACHA (2015) and children’s piece O NOME DA HISTÓRIA (2014) for the company. They have also created Dance Against The Machine and RIDERS ON THE STAGE (2014/15) for the post-graduate company Edge from The Place, London, improvisation-based works developed in a workshop format with presentations at Parque da Devesa, Casa das Artes, Famalicão. Their more recent collaboration: Instructions for the gods: i4gods (2017) premiered at MNAC, Lisbon, commissioned by BoCA- Biennial of Contemporary Arts, a 5h continuous performance with costumes by Estelita Mendonça.
She has developed several projects in collaboration with various artists, such as Agnieszka Dmochowska, Said Dakash , Neuza Rodrigues/ Crescer Além da Dança, Pedro Bandeira, António Mv, Nuno Miguel, Rogério Nuno Costa, Nuno Ferreira, Filipe Lopes, Sónia Rodrigues, Violeta Lisboa, João Ferro Martins, João Costa Espinho, Abraham Hurtado, Mark Tompkins, Davis Freeman, MIckael Oliveira, Acerina Amador, Raquel Castro and Meg Stuart.
She has worked as a dancer, actress and performer with various artists in Portugal and abroad. Namely, with Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods, Francisco Camacho, Rui Horta/ Companhia Instável, Filip van Huffel/ Retina Dance, John Romão, Rafael Alvarez, Jerôme Bel, Tiago Cadete, Rogério Nuno Costa and Dinis Machado.
Completed the Choreographic Creation, Dance Research and Training Programme -PEPCC at Fórum Dança (2010). Graduated from The Northern School of Contemporary Dance-NSCD (UK 2003). Was an apprentice dancer with Ballet Theatre Munich, under the direction of Philip Taylor (2004) and one of the first associate artists at NSCD where she choreographed Best Imitation of Myself for the graduate company VERVE05 and co-funded the artistic collective THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT in Leeds.
Mariana was an Associate Artist of EIRA between 2012 and 2016, Lisbon and directs her own non-profit company A BELA Associação.

É coreógrafa e performer. Vive em Almada. O seu trabalho tem sido apresentado em diversos países na Europa e América do Sul.
Criou e apresentou And So?…The End (2010), Après Le Bain (2011), The Trap (2011 vencedor do Prémio do Público Jardin D’Europe- Austria), Peça do Coração: For Him (2012), A Power Ballad (2013) & Resurrection (2017) ambas co-criações com o coreógrafo Mark Tompkins, THE WEATHER™ (2016) e EXI(s)T(s) (2018).
Em 2013 inicia uma colaboração com o músico Jonny Kadaver criando performances de diferentes formatos com música ao vivo. Colaboram regularmente com o Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte tendo criado a peça de grupo End of Transmission (2014) o solo MACHA (2015) e a peça infantil O NOME DA HISTÓRIA para a companhia. Também criaram Dance Against The Machine e Riders on the stage (2014/15) para a companhia Londrina Edge-The Place, trabalhos com base na improvisação e criados num curto espaço de tempo sendo apresentados no Parque da Devesa, Casa das Artes, Famalicão. A sua colaboração mais recente: Instructions for the gods- i4gods estreou no âmbito da BoCA- Bienal de Artes Performativas no Museu do Chiado, uma performance de 5 horas s/ intervalo com figurinos de Estelita Mendonça.
Integrou ainda o projecto Solo Performance Commissioning Project (SPCP) em 2009, dirigida pela coreógrafa Deborah Hay (Findhorn, Escócia), tendo estreado a sua adaptação da coreografia no âmbito de Nome Eira#3, em Lisboa (2011).

Como intérprete destaca o trabalho com os criadores: Meg Stuart/ Damaged Goods, Francisco Camacho, Filip van Huffell/Retina Dance, Rui Horta /Companhia Instável, Né Barros, Tiago Cadete, Rafael Alvarez, Jerôme Bel, John Romão, Rogério Nuno Costa e Dinis Machado.
Licenciada em dança pela Northern School of Contemporary Dance-NSCD (Inglaterra 2003). Estagiou no Ballet Theatre Munich, sob a direcção artística de Philip Taylor (Alemanha 2004). Completou o Programa de Estudo e Criação Coreográfica-PEPCC (Portugal 2009).
Entre 2004 e 2005 foi artista associada da Northern School of Contemporary Dance-NSCD, onde coreografou Best Imitation of Myself para a companhia VERVE05 e co-fundou o colectivo artístico The Resistance Movement com Said Dakash, em Leeds/Inglaterra.
Foi artista associada à EIRA entre 2012 e 2016, tendo sido artista residente entre 2010 e 2012.
É directora artística d'A Bela Associação.
