Descripción del Artista
MARA CASTILHO . ARTIST STATEMENT
My work emerges from the alliance between video, performance, photography and installation. My aims are to find an artistic expression, which combines and integrates a multimedia approach visual arts. The work also reflects the interest in challenging the perceived notion of space, viewer and artwork. Hence the idea of having videos, objects and performers in the Galleries, foyers, toilets, closed downs buildings, parks, lakes, swimming-pools, etc and having the spectators inside or around the artwork.
As an example many of my video-installation works and performances are ongoing projects, which employs a variety of strategies to connect with different spaces and its spectators. Reflecting this tendency several works are performed as several hours happening-installations or site-specific video-installations in various locations, opening visual art to a different and wide audience and, at the same time, adapting it to this unique spatial environment.
The effect of braking down space boundaries with the interaction of video and performance is an ongoing process of modifying and changing the works. This course of action suggests a work that demands a permanent transaction between audience and artwork; a dynamic one which aims to induce a process of self-questioning in which both, viewer and artwork, must negotiate a position within the work as an active one of thinking and reflection.
Drawing from the complexity and duality of the human condition and on ideas of displacement, loneliness, femininity, suffering and loss, the work reflects my questions to the society around us. Frequently making reference to the body, its vulnerability and resistance my work is permeated with juxtapositions of opposites such as beauty and horror, life and death, desire and revolt. I want to launch questions to the viewer, without given the answers. The works are conceptually created to give wide interpretations, although my concept and views are very strong behind each work.
