Descripción del Artista
Maluzhane’s oficial name is “Amilton Simião Bila” born 1988 in the city of Maputo, Mozambique. Curious since childhood, he consistently stood out in design and trade classes covered in the public primary school system. He became fully involved in his artistic career in 2005 when entering The National School for Visual Arts becoming a professionally licensed graphic designer. Later he did his undergraduate studies in “Cultural Studies and Management” at the Instituto Superior de Artes y Cultura (ISArC) – Superior Institute of Arts and Culture.
Maluzhane is a Mozambican artist who for years participated in a myriad of relevant artistic interventions of multiple genres, winning prizes as well as receiving nominations to expose his work in major visual arts expositions in his home country. He is now crossing borders beyond Africa to Portugal and Spain while being firmly grounded to the reality of his Maxaquene and the materials that surround the urban growth of his childhood neighbourhood. He chooses to give voice to a complex story of survival and rapid urban growth using recycled materials and creating concepts which are inclusionary and challenge the meaning of sculpture, participatory work and the movement and use of materials.
Searching for more dialogue is part of his work process and most recently theatre installation is probably one of the most refreshing ideas yet to emerge from this artist. His non-intention to abandon place and source of origin, something he finds that is consistently challenging his work, is accompanied by a commitment to fluidity and collaboration across borders. The requirements and efforts needed to do this kind of work is extraordinary and now especially because of the current unstable socio-economic landscape of Mozambique. The recycled metal and plastics are woven with people and stories attached to an everchanging landscape, resulting in almost creatures and a deconstruction of messages exclaiming to be told
