About
The work of Magda Skupinska is defined by its organic abstraction. The reduction of the form to the minimum is confronted by the organic quality of the materials used. At first, the canvases can be defined by its reductive proportion while multiple references to abstract expressionism and minimalism may come as instantaneous responses. Nevertheless, as we look closer, the organic composition of the materials brings the work into a new dimension.
The canvases insert an individual angle by means of the context in which they were created. The reaction of the materials like peppermint, chili, sandalwood or milk combined with fabric brings a new meaning that deprives the author from its hand, taking a distinctive dimension that varies on different dynamics like chemical reactions, changes of smell, colour, mixtures or the patina they will originate after a certain period of time. Using food for the sake of art conveys some new dynamics not only within the artist and the piece but also within the product and the audience, the space and the collector. The unconventionality of these materials makes every work unique and individual in relationship with the standard artistic production, the space and the aesthetic and substantial conventions.
The emotional attachment entrenched in its abstraction turns the works into active beings. Each piece thus becomes an external mirror where the audience is reflected and confronted with its form. From the material to the viewer, the profound emotion of its colours, figures and large composition invite to meditation while reaching to what Kant defines as “the sublime”. Her biomorphic forms evoke a metaphysical position that invites the viewer to analyse their most basic emotions.
