Pat Lemos (Spain) and Lukas Lehmann (Germany) are visual artists and members of the artist duo LEMOS + LEHMANN. Their practice explores the connections between spirituality, culture and ecology, often drawing on the practice of walking, drifting, and fieldwork in the places inhabited. They are interested in provoking reflection on traditions of perception, representation and relationship to the world. Existence, emptiness, beauty, the sublime are some of the conceptual paradigms that move them; cornerstones of their work, straddling Iceland and Japan. Nature and its intrinsic visual and emotional relationship to existence is often the source of LEMOS + LEHMANN’s deepest impressions. A space in which people are only present in the form of the effects of their actions. The duo constantly crosses the boundaries between the photographic, pictorial and spatial image. The limits and possibilities of the use of sound and silence, objects and materials, the body in space, movement, stillness… are some of the concepts studied, progressively opening the practice to installation. It is in the exhibition space where the creative process comes to a close and the work is transformed, a sort of rite of passage in which every previous step becomes meaningful. By inviting the public to contemplation and conscious presence, the artists propose a complete and sensorial experience, a journey that, sustained over time, harbours something profoundly spiritual. Something that remains. The duo was part of ARCO Art Fair 2023 in Madrid, Spain. Exhibiting individually in Etesian Gallery (Menorca, Spain), CAAA (Guimarães, Portugal), Ramskram Gallery (Reykjavík, Iceland), The Liminal (Valencia, Spain) or Lokal-Int (Biel, Switzerland), among others. Collectively, they have been part of different international shows, highlighting Kiyomizu-dera Temple (Kyoto, Japan), Sage Culture (Los Angeles, USA), Listval (Reykjavík, Iceland) and CICA Museum (Gimpo, South Korea). They have recently released their first sonic artist book SOLSTICE, kicking off a series of listening sessions that began on 21.12.23 in the anechoic chamber of the UVigo, Spain, and will continue through 2024. The project was honored with the Jerònima Galés award for the best artist book of 2024. Pat and Lukas are founders and directors of BONFIRE, a platform hosting online artist residencies and art advisory, providing space for gathering and cooperation between artists and agents of the contemporary art and culture.
