Joana Choumali, a visual artist from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, specializes in conceptual portraiture, mixed media, and documentary photography. She studied graphic arts in Casablanca before transitioning from advertising to photography. Her unique process involves embroidering directly onto her photographs, blending craft and art in a meditative gesture.
She has won several prestigious awards, including the 2014 Cap Prize and the 2019 Prix Pictet, becoming its first African winner for her series Çavaaller. Her works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and featured in publications like The New York Times and The Guardian.
Choumali’s art is included in major collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the MET in New York. She was also named the 2020 Robert Gardner Fellow at Harvard University. Her innovative work reflects on culture, identity, and hope, gaining global recognition.
