Descripción del Artista
Isabel Merchante is a visual artist from Madrid, Spain. Her practice includes site-specific installation, sculpture, photography, and performance, guided by a post-medium approach where the concept of each project defines its technique. Often, she envisions her works as ephemeral experiences, anchored to specific moments and places to create illusions, rituals, and portals. Her research engages with fields like theoretical physics and computer science to craft speculative narratives that reimagine technology and its anthropological and socio-cultural implications.
She graduated with honors in Fine Arts and Design from Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid and spent a year studying at the École Supérieure des Arts et Industries Graphiques in Paris. She completed an MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art, London, and is currently pursuing an MFA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths, London, with support from a "la Caixa" Foundation Postgraduate Fellowships.
Solo projects include H+E at the Hejduk Towers, Cidade da Cultura de Galicia (2024); Harmony at Feria Marte, Valencia (2022); and Refugio de las luces at Biblioteca Xenius, Madrid (2022). She has exhibited in group shows and institutions such as Future Archaeologies at Camden Art Centre, London (2024); Sonic Disruption at TATE Modern, London (2024); Hot Sheet during Frieze, London (2024); XXXIV Circuitos de Artes Plásticas at Sala de Arte Joven, Madrid (2023); Move Fast and Break Things: Take the Floor at Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid (2023); Mirror/Window at Centro de Arte Moderno, Tetuán (2022); This Space Does Not Exist at Matadero Madrid (2021); and Postatlántico at Galería Nueva, Madrid, and Galería 12:00, Bogotá (2020).
Awards and recognitions include the Generación 2025 Award from La Casa Encendida, Fundación Montemadrid (2024); Artistic Intervention Award at the Hejduk Towers (2024); XXXIV Circuitos de Artes Plásticas of the Community of Madrid (2023); We:Now Visual Arts Annual First Prize (2023); Silver LAUS Award for her Final Degree Project (2023); and the First Prize in Versiona Thyssen (2019).
