Descripción del Artista
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1965, Taveras studied Fine Arts, sculpture in particular, at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo. He has also participated in Non-toxic Printmaking workshops in New York, such as Silk Aquatint at Julio Valdez Studio and Solarplate with Dan Welden. He has taught at the Altos de Chavon School of Design, (Parsons The New School for Design affiliate in the Dominican Republic), where he has also been an Artist-In-Residence several times. He has taught at the Universidad Iberoamericana, at UNIBE and Universidad Pedro Henriquez Ureña, both in Santo Domingo, and has had 10 solo national and international exhibitions, including the last two in 2006 at the Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Republic and the Museum of the Instituto de Cultura Puertoriqueña, in San Juan Puerto Rico.
Taveras was an artist-in-residence at the University of Massachusetts and Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1996. His works have received numerous prizes in biennials and contests, including: Best Work of Art by a Foreign Artist, at the San Juan Association of Art Critics Contemporary Art Show, Puerto Rico, 2006, and Second Place in the 2nd Latin American Printmaking Biennal, at the Printmaking Museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2002. He has been recognized by Universidad Iberoamericana, one of the most prestigious universities in the Dominican Republic, for his life’s work and contributions to the fine arts. He has participated in more than 100 contests and group exhibitions in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Peru, Japan, Bulgaria, Spain, Cuba, Ljubljana (Slovenia), Norway, Brazil, Belgium, Luxembourg and United States, among others. He is currently an Artist-in-Residence at Hunter College Ceramics Department and also Curator of Julio Valdez Project Space, both in New York City.
