Descripción del Artista
Casto Solano
Background, experience and the importance of public art.
Ever since I was a child I can remember thoughts and sensations. Intuitions. Children’s things? Amongst them, my fascination for the universe and the stars. So many, so small, so bright. Like the ants; so many, so small, and always with something to do. Later on, studying science by day and art by night, it seemed to me illogical that science and art should be considered as separate things. My taste is for technology and for ecological civilisation. For rivers, lagoons and estuaries. For the sea and its tidal pools… for worlds within worlds that create yet more worlds… for life within life that creates oceans of life. All of these concerns, intuitions and thoughts have caused me to develop ideas that try to artistically represent the magnificence of small things and demonstrate their need for protection.
I feel that art and science cannot be seen as separate entities and are fascinated by the links between them. I'm interested in the way that the smallest and least visible details can often have enormous repercussions for ourselves and our universe. I delight in each creation that allows to examine such themes, and make just as much use of classical techniques and materials as of cutting edge technologies and materials.
I have designed and installed artwork in a wide variety of public spaces, ranging from sculptures in city streets and avenues, to larger, more interactive pieces in high profile spaces such as at the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. I have also designed and installed artworks of much larger dimensions in areas subject to heavy traffic, such as in the Port at Ondarroa, as well as in important pieces in areas subject to heavy pedestrian transit, such as in the entrance hall to the Museum of Human Evolution, Burgos. Currently, I am making sculptures for populated areas in Vancouver, Seattle, and Jeju. In all such cases, my artwork is carefully modeled so that neither freedom of movement nor the openness and visual aesthetic within the spaces in question are adversely affected.
My academic background is in fine arts and industrial electronics. Coupled with my ardent interest in cutting-edge ecological materials and technologies, my skills allow me to produce artworks that incorporate new materials and technologies into sculptures that last for lifetimes and consume little, if any, energy. Naturally, I am entirely fluent in the drafting and utilisation of architectural, engineering and design specifications and drawings. In whichever case, I always remain acutely aware of the multiple variables that must be taken into account when undertaking such projects, and above all, the care that must be taken to work with and to satisfy the people who inhabit the area or space in question.
I see art designed to last mere decades as ephemeral and therefore create artworks designed to last for lifetimes. All of my pieces remain in their original locations, in conditions that match the day of their installation and having required practically no maintenance on the part of their commissioners. It would require a catastrophic environmental event, or a decision by the area’s citizens and representatives to cause a piece of mine to be relocated or removed.
