To Apply
Art can draw real strength from the past. The Renaissance drew on Ancient Greece and Rome; the Pre-Raphaelites drew on art before Raphael; Picasso drew on sculpture in the 11th century; and Whistler and the Impressionists drew their inspiration from the traditions of Japanese printmaking.
Innovation is hugely important but it rarely comes from nothing. The Young Masters Art Prize looks for artists who combine innovation with awareness of the Old Masters and the art of the past. Old Masters in the meaning of the prize refers not just to Europe but also to wider, global artistic traditions, ranging from the pyramids of Egypt to the building of the Taj Mahal and later.
By drawing attention to the legacy of the Old Masters in contemporary art, the prize opens up a wider dialogue about our present-day artistic culture and its relationship to the past. This prize is unique in shedding light on the ways artists use their awareness of the past to help them come to terms with the present.
The Young Masters Art Prize is open to artists living in the UK and overseas, both in Europe and further afield. We welcome artists working in a vast range of practices: painting, sculpture and installation, printmaking, drawing, video and sound. Our aim is to encourage emerging and newly established artists to apply, as well as those who are perhaps established abroad but less well known in the UK.
If an artist is successfully shortlisted, he/she is may consider creating completely new work for the Young Masters Art Prize exhibition, taking place in the autumn, 2012.
