Descripción de la Exposición

“Daniela Libertad: Yo regreso a las acciones sencillas” is the first solo museum exhibition in the United States by Mexico City–born, Germany-based artist Daniela Libertad (b. 1983). Central to her multidisciplinary practice is the exploration of a common performative language between drawing, sculpture, photography, and video. By returning to “the simple actions,” as the artist herself asserts in the title of this exhibition, Libertad stages the unbreakable bond between body and object while activating craft and storytelling traditions. This exhibition features artworks produced over the last decade, which emerge from the artist’s rigorous investigation into the basic principles of the visual arts itself. By forging an intimate connection with seemingly simple materials, Libertad reveals the hidden narratives and performative potential of everyday objects. Of particular note is Yo regreso a las acciones sencillas (rodear), a large-scale, site-specific yarn piece created for the front gallery. This work alludes to the impact that the pandemic has had on our relationships with each other, physical space, and nature. Daniela Libertad is a graduate of New York University’s Master’s Program in Visual Art (2010) and the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda” (2007). She also studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe in Germany (2006) under the tutelage of artist Ernst Caramelle. Currently, she is a recipient of the National System of Art Creators (SNCA) scholarship granted by the Mexican government. Her work has been exhibited in Mexico, Spain, Germany, and the United States. “Yo regreso a las acciones sencillas” is organized by Associate Director Taras W. Matla and Curatorial Assistant Patricia Ortega-Miranda, with assistance from Curatorial Assistant Melanie Nguyen. Major support is provided by the Dorothy and Nicholas Orem Exhibition Fund. Generous support is provided by the Maryland State Arts Council. This exhibition is in association with University of Maryland's Arts for All initiative.
