Descripción de la Exposición
Sin Título Gallery is proud to present Topiarius: Work by Vanessa Freitag. Primarily working as a soft sculpture artist, Freitag uses various textile techniques to build organic shapes that are often imaginary and undefined.
Topiarius means artificial garden. It's a Greek word that was also adopted by the Latin language that refers to the care, clipping or trimming of a garden. A childhood memory from Vanessa Freitag's grandmother's garden bursts open a series of objects that are presented here. Her sculptural explorations are linked through visual themes that allude to flowers, plants and animals.
Freitag uses traditional domestic techniques of sewing, crochet, embroidery and weaving that are a counterpoint to mass production and consumerism. She stimulates our own creativity to find new paths to human connection. By repurposing her own garments, her friends' and thrift shop clothes, she gives new life and meaning to mass produced items. She deftly invites a visual intimacy between the viewer and the objects.
