COMEL Vanna Migliorin Contemporary Art Award
"The Aluminium eXperience"
10th edition
Entries open until July, 16, 2023
Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.
Steve Jobs in a Wired interview, February 1996
The tenth edition of the COMEL award is kicking off: the international competition that enhances the expressive, aesthetic, communicative and constructive possibilities of using aluminium.
A competition that started in 2012 "Between Heart and Reason" and over these years has come a long way to become an authoritative competition that honestly and seriously rewards the artistic, original, and high-quality use of aluminium, an award that now has its own personality consolidated by the experience made.
Therefore, this year's title, which is a common thread in this edition, will be The Aluminium eXperience: that is, an invitation to experiment with this material, both to artists who have never used this metal, thus the urge to challenge themselves to try something new; and an invitation to those who have already used aluminium and have accumulated over time, as much or as little as they have, experience with the various techniques of working with it.
It is said that an individual's personality is formed through the set of experiences, encounters, emotions felt, readings, passions, and things learned and loved. Each brick contributes to creating the dwelling of our Being. The artist's experience is formed through his or her path, curiosity, and, of course, by the talent enhanced by commitment.
Artists this year are invited to show, through aluminium works, their research, their way of feeling Art and Life.
A jury of experts, chaired by critic and writer Giorgio Agnisola, who is also the event's artistic director, will select 13 finalist works from all participants that will be exhibited at the end of October at the Spazio COMEL Contemporary Art in Latina. At the conclusion of the exhibition, a winner will be decreed who will be awarded a cash prize of 3500 euros and a solo exhibition, also at Spazio COMEL, with a dedicated catalogue. The public will also vote for their favorite work; whoever wins the most votes will be the protagonist of a solo exhibition.
Participation is free, to register or receive more information you can visit www.premiocomel.it
An exceptional jury, made up of academic luminaries and contemporary critics, will examine the entries and select the 13 finalists: the jury president and artistic director of the award is Giorgio Agnisola, art critic and writer, professor emeritus of sacred art and cultural heritage at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy. He will be joined by some significant and prestigious returnees: Ada Patrizia Fiorillo, historian, art critic, journalist, and associate professor of History of Contemporary Art and Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts at the University of Ferrara, already juror in 2018; Marco Nocca, art historian, lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, member of the jury back in 2017; Giulia Palma, Director of the Bioiconographic Archive and Historical Funds of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, a juror in the last edition 2022; Elena Pontiggia, art critic and historian, professor of contemporary art History at the Brera Academy and the Milan Polytechnic, as well as a member of the jury for the 2020-2021 edition; Marilena Vita, artist, performer, events curator and art critic, General Secretary Nuova Aica Italia, member of the Boards of AICA International, a juror in the 2022 edition; Maria Gabriella Mazzola representing CO.ME.L. promoter and sole sponsor of the Award.
