Descripción de la Exposición
The exibhition that finishes the project of individual exhibitions of young artists, “There is a Witch in the Yard” presents unpublished works of the carioca Arthur Chaves, artist who has been standing out in the scene of the contemporary art with his works done with a mixture of materials and techniques, like painting, drawing and sewing on pieces of fabric that do not take definite shapes.
The exhibition will feature works on flat surfaces, which extrapolate two-dimensionality through the collages and agglomerations of fabrics and also three-dimensional works, of fabrics attached to the wall itself “almost a garment without a body, a cocoon, as if something happened there and not we know what it is. ”
In the container, on the terrace of the gallery, Arthur Chaves will complement the exhibition with a specific site, practically transferring his studio there, and producing the installation for a week, containing all the elements that involve his creation process. “It is an attempt to deal with a more conceptual order of work.”
The image of paintings accompany the artist from childhood, “both in the illustrated Bible family, and in a school history book”, being an important reference. However, Arthur Chaves says that although several people say that his work is painting, this is not the way he sees it. “The works made only with fabrics are a kind of fuel in my work, and I think of them as drawings, although I do not know if this is the most correct nomenclature, but no doubt depart from the reasoning of drawing, which involves mass, line … “” These are designs with more formal and geometric boundaries, mixed with the lack of control that fabrics bring, “he explains. “They have the nature of drawing, more true. It’s the bone, the structure, what happens before. ” He says that “from this reasoning, things have been expanding, especially for the works that are in two planes, although they do not only involve paper. I work on a lightweight plastic plate, and basically use tissues and papers of various natures. From the simplest, bought in the Sahara to a fine linen that belonged to a friend’s family. “
