Descripción de la Exposición
SOUTH SOUTH’s second edition of VEZA will focus on digital art and the remarkable possibilities of new media, as well as our core activity of facilitating new connections within the cultural ecosystems across the Global South and beyond. We’re delighted to announce that we will be partnering with NIIO – a curated platform for the streaming, acquisition, and sharing of video art – as well as SP–Arte – the renowned international art fair in São Paulo. Together we will highlight galleries and artists across Latin America, Africa and Asia.
VEZA 02 will feature a digital showcase of seminal video art from the Global South. Facilitated by the innovative technology of NIIO, VEZA 02 will coincide with the April 2022 edition of SP-Arte and a physical presentation of the gallery video art showcase will take place at the fair. This marks SOUTH SOUTH’s transition into a hybrid model through collaboration with regional fairs. This edition will encourage the acquisition of new media, specifically in our partnership with the innovative technology of NIIO. This platform provides ease of use and ownership through its state of the art secure blockchain technology, enabling an avenue for art spaces and arts practitioners to shape their own narratives within the cluttered and developing conversations about the relationship between art, new technology and web3.
Following on from last year’s curatorial team of Elvira Dyangani Ose, Rodrigo Moura, Paula Nascimento and Suzana Sousa, VEZA 02 will also boast a robust curated programme. Titled Bending the Axis, this year’s programme is curated by Meyken Barreto, Uche James Iroha, and the curatorial duo Carlos Quijon, Jr. & Kathleen Ditzig and was made possible with the generosity of Mr. Jorge M. Perez and the inaugural SOUTH SOUTH x El Espacio 23 Curatorial Residency. It includes works by emerging and established artists and a Talks Programme engaging cultural practitioners from across the globe. Full details of Bending the Axis, and participating galleries will be announced later this month.
This moment also provides an opportunity to launch the VEZA NEW MEDIA FUND, providing support to artists working in film, video and other digital platforms. To be activated during VEZA 02, the fund will allow museums focused on the Global South and diaspora to acquire new media works from galleries taking part in VEZA for their collections. This year’s beneficiary is El Museo del Barrio, New York’s leading Latino cultural institution.
VEZA 02, taking place 31 March to 10 April 2022, will feature a digital showcase of seminal video art from the Global South via the innovative technology of NIIO – a curated platform for the streaming, acquisition, preservation and sharing of video and new media art, including NFTs. VEZA 02 will coincide with the April 2022 edition of SP–Arte and a physical presentation of the gallery video art showcase will take place at the fair. The partnership with SP–Arte will extend throughout the year with a collaborative production of quarterly thematic newsletters highlighting artists, galleries and events from the Global South.
VEZA 02 will underscore new technologies that encourage the acquisition of new media, specifically in our partnership with the NIIO Art platform which provides ease of use and ownership through its state of the art secure blockchain technology, enabling an avenue for art spaces and arts practitioners to shape their own narratives. Furthermore, the launch of the VEZA New Media Fund enables a museum with a global south focus to acquire media works with a significant budget for their collections. This year’s beneficiary is El Museo del Barrio, New York’s leading Latino cultural institution.
Collaboration and innovation are at the twin strands that make up SOUTH SOUTH’s DNA. Initiated by Goodman Gallery in 2020 as a response to the pandemic, its platform is a community and resource for artists, galleries, curators and collectors dedicated to the art of the Global South — and a site of discovery, combining an archive and a year-round curated programme of live interactive and selling events that harness the possibilities of cutting-edge technologies.
Explaining the thinking behind these partnerships, Liza Essers, Founder of SOUTH SOUTH and Owner of Goodman Gallery, states:
“Being based on the southern tip of Africa, I’ve often felt removed from a central art economy, but been compelled to engage with it in order to function as an internationally recognised gallery. There are new possibilities emerging that can powerfully address this marginalisation of Global South art scenes. One of course is collaboration with vital, like-minded platforms such as SP–Arte, and the other is through utilising the remarkable developments of the digital world generated by entities such as NIIO. These pathways are at the heart of SOUTH SOUTH’s current pursuit.”
Fernanda Feitosa, Director of SP-Arte:
“As an international art fair located in Latin America’s largest city, it has always been vital for us to nurture dialog and exchange between the Brazilian art scene and that of our neighboring countries. With time, as the fair grew and became more acclaimed, galleries from central economies joined SP–Arte, which was a second step for us in widening our reach. Now, in our 18th edition, we can go one step further and, with this partnership with SOUTH SOUTH, actively work to create ties between Brazil and other countries from the Global South whose artistic production remains little known to the Brazilian audicience, specially from Africa and Asia.”
Rob Anders, CEO of NIIO:
“Niio is proud to participate in South South’s mission of elevating the presence of the Global South. Our platform’s ability to connect artists with global audiences – and making important new introductions - is central to today’s digital transformation. Unleashing the creativity of the global south, as expressed through digital and new media, is what our partnership is all about. We offer bespoke, easy-to-use technology for an end-to-end solution that protects the work, supports acquisition and ensures that the work can easily be displayed and experienced as intended by the artist. Niio looks forward to a long-term relationship with South South”
Rodrigo Moura, Chief Curator of El Museo Del Barrio:
“El Museo del Barrio feels honored to be the beneficiary of this innovative initiative. The Museum’s permanent collection is a true gem and being able to add new media works by Latino and Latin American artists is an opportunity to keep expanding its importance.”
Shireen Gandhy, SOUTH SOUTH collaborator and Director of Chemould Prescott Road:
“This year SOUTH SOUTH continues to dedicate itself to generating new opportunities and visibility for galleries and artists in and related to the Global South. This is enhanced through partnerships that will enable galleries to take ownership of new developments in digital spaces and be present at a significant regional art fair at a time when logistic and financial barriers for many Global South art spaces are still prominent.”
