Julian Navarro Projects presents Setting Forth, a group exhibition of works by Mathieu Asselin, Teresa Diehl, Richard Garet, Guerra de la Paz, Jessie Laino, Maria Evelia Marmolejo and Wendy Wischer, on view September 28 through October 26, 2013, at MAAS Mandragoras Art Space in Long Island City, New York.

Setting Forth examines the way in which artists might use performative elements as a material in the production of their work. The different practices in the exhibition focus on the expansion of sculptural installations, video, photography and sound space intervention into works that incorporate performative elements as a process.

Mathieu Asselin employs non-traditional documentary photography, creating a new narrative and using an artistic approach, where his eye leads us into a world where location, memory and time are fluid impressions of the reconstruction of stories closer to the truth.

Teresa Diehl involves installation, video, sound, sculpture, and photography. Her work is a hallucinatory feast for the senses - smell, texture, sound, touch, visuality itself, are stretched and played before the viewer. And the body is experienced in strangely unfamiliar ways to both seduce the viewer into the closeness of the encounter yet cause a concomitant discomfort.

Richard Garet interweaves various media including moving image, sound, multimedia performance, and photography. In work ranging from modified environments to site specific installations, to audiovisual screening works, Garet constructs intimate spaces and immersive situations that draw attention to the processes of perception and cognition, and which activate sensorial, physical, psychological phenomena that reflect on the nature and experience of time.

Jessie Laino explores how objects, situations and interactions can affect one's subconscious and how one reacts to emotions such as nostalgia, anxiety, euphoria, pleasure, or disdain. Laino constructs ambiguous environments or autonomous objects that provoke conversation with the viewer an inch outside of their normal memory patterns. The works are just there to exist as a neutral place for the viewer- a place where the familiar and unfamiliar exist simultaneously.

Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz

Based on a combination of traditional disciplines and experimentation with dimension and the use of unconventional materials, our work is inspired by an essential familiarity with found ready-made objects; whose archaeological qualities and encapsulated energies expose the significance of the human footprint while revealing underlying psychosocial and environmental messages.

Maria Evelia Marmolejo is one of the most radical performance artists to emerge in the 1980s in Latin America. The political and feminist performatic work by Maria Evelia Marmolejo started in the late 1970s in Cali, Colombia. In her work, the woman's body plays a powerful role addressing socio-political issues, pertinent to Latin America and the world at large.

Wendy Wischer creates conceptually based work in a variety of media ranging from photography to sculptural objects, to site-specific installations, video and public works. Much of the work is based on blurring the separation between the intrinsic history of working with nature and the cutting edge of 'New Media'.
