NAVE PRESENTS SONIA NAVARRO DURING LISBON ART WEEKEND'24
Mercedes Cerón, director of NAVE, is pleased to announce that on November 7th, will open the exhibition 'SEMPRE' by Spanish artist Sonia Navarro, which will be included in the official program of Lisbon Art Weekend 24.
I am honored to present Sonia's work. The artist's research into textiles of Portuguese origin resulted in a collaboration with Burel Factory and is evident in much of the work presented in the exhibition. Nacho Ruiz referred to this respect for the raw material and knowledge of each culture in the text of the exhibition, "an invisible line that lives in our imagination and that separates us."
The Spanish artist with a recognized international career presents her first solo exhibition, entitled SEMPRE, at Galeria NAVE. The artist from Murcia, who lives and works in Madrid, has exhibited in Portugal for the third time.
Sonia Navarro is known for her works that challenge the mechanisms of power, especially those that contribute to the establishment of a hierarchy between genders, relating women to domestic work and their impossibility of mobility. This led to women's constant struggle against established social networks. For a long time, women used threads, needles and fabrics to sew. In Spain during the Civil War, this was one of the main ways for families to survive when their men were killed.
Navarro's latest works have a process in which the city and freedom are present through different supports, such as sculpture and installation, photography, or drawing. This year, the artist who works in parallel with the knowledge of those who know the materials was recognized with the acquisition of a piece by the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.
"Sonia often sews routes. Her paintings can sometimes be understood as maps that establish paths that women, those who crochet and with sewing machines, have been building over cities. Her stitches appear and disappear rhythmically."
