Descripción de la Exposición Rhythm and Chalks is an exhibition by Fabiana Cruz (b. Caracas, 1984) that will be held at LA Artcore, Los Angeles, California, from October 1 through 28, 2012. The exhibition is designed around two relevant aspects of Ms. Cruz's work: translating music into visual interpretations, which is the core of her artistic exploration, and her interest in the process of creation, which is as relevant to her as the resulting work. The selected videos will reflect the simplicity and clarity of her message and the joy of working with her hands in the digital age. Her dual training as a visual artist and as a musician has granted Ms. Cruz the freedom and flexibility to explore intersections of both disciplines. Fascinated by the concept of synesthesia (uncommon sensory experiences caused by two or more senses cooperating in perception), she makes the viewer hear music in colors. Ms. Cruz has found videos to be the most suitable medium for translating music into images. She has a special affection for the process of 'solving'' a piece and selecting the materials that allow her to execute preconceived images. With a consistent approach towards the realization of her pieces, she uses technology in a craft-like manner, mostly recording her manual work and later editing it into videos that she makes available on YouTube. Her interest in the production process has led her to demystify her work by showing viewers the 'making of' her videos, also available on YouTube. A selection of these videos will be included in the exhibition. The selected videos will provide an overview of the different solutions Ms. Cruz has given to her pieces, with a focus on materials: paper, chalk, water, paint, and light. The most recent videos are paired with photography. A simple-format handout will accompany the exhibition and will feature a short text, biographical notes on the artist, and full-color reproductions. The videos will be available for acquisition and proceeds will directly support the artist.
