Descripción de la Exposición
Sicardi Gallery presents Progression, an exhibition of work by Brazilian artist Abraham Palatnik. Progressionhighlights the primacy of perception in the work of the Rio-based artist and kinetic art pioneer. This exhibition, in collaboration with Nara Roesler Gallery, will be Palatnik’s first solo show at Sicardi Gallery. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, October 26, from 6-8pm.
Progression presents key pieces from Palatnik in which both organic and inorganic forms of technology are charged with linguistic and visual codes. The poetics of invention are central to Palatnik’s work, or progressive reliefs, located at the interstices of art, science, nature, and industry. These pieces are striking for their synthesis of organic and industrial materials. Inspired by the optical-kinetic possibilities of native hardwoods, like jacarandas, the artist’s progressions embody his quest to discipline sensory patterns, reconfiguring organic materials into the demarcated essence of form.
Abraham Palatnik was born into a Russian Jewish family in northeastern Brazil in 1928. In the 1930s, Palatnik moved to Palestine (now Israel) where he later received technical training in motor mechanics. He initiated artistic studies under the painter Aron Avni and sculptor Moshe Sternshus. After attending the Municipal Institute of Art of Tel Aviv, Palatnik returned to Brazil in 1948.
The artist garnered renown for his Aparelho Cinecromático [Kinechromatic Device], exhibited in the 1st São Paulo International Biennial and applauded by critic Mário Pedrosa as a landmark work. In 1954, Palatnik joined artists Ivan Serpa, Ferreira Gullar, Franz Weissmann, and Lygia Clark in the vanguard Grupo Frente.
Abraham Palatnik has exhibited internationally and was included in the groundbreaking exhibition Inverted Utopias: Avant-Garde Art in Latin America at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2004. He is currently exhibiting in Kinesthesia: Latin American Kinetic Art, 1954 - 1969, at the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Springs, CA. Palatnik’s works can be found in major international collections, including: Itaú Cultural in Saõ Paulo, Brazil; Museu de Arte Contemporãnea da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil; Museu de Arte Contemporãnea de Brasilia, Brazil; Museu de Arte Contemporãnea de Niterói, Brazil; Museu de Arte Contemporãnea do Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil; Museu de Arte Moderna do Sao Paulo, Brazil; Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium; William Keiser Museum, Krefeld, Germany; The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, USA; and The Museum of Fine Arts (MFAH), Houston, USA.
