Descripción de la Exposición
Lois Lambert Gallery presents the Los Angeles debut of Darwin Estacio Martinez's new body of work "Pinturas de Género" or "Paintings of their Kind."
Darwin Estacio Martinez explores the fragments and figures that compose a universally understood visual language. Martinez is interested in the multiple associations that can be assigned to the images he constructs. Martinez's paintings are deliberately open to interpretation. Martinez uses the figures of headless men and women to abstract the human experience by emphasizing our concerns about how we appear.
Havana-based Martinez draws inspiration from the work of American artist Edward Hopper. Similar to Hopper, Martinez's love of film is reflected in the cinematic quality of his work and the compositions of his paintings. Martinez believes that in pursuing a method that emphasizes the generic, he can capture the fluid nature of identification and transcend national identity. It is the yearning for the ideal self that Martinez captures through fragmenting the human form and leaving his scenarios inconclusive. Martinez says: "My work is based on the search for pictorial possibilities from the standpoint of formal and conceptual painting."
Martinez has studied art since childhood. At nine years old he began attending primary art school in Cuba. He received his Masters degree in 2011 from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Cuba. He's currently a professor at La Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in San Alejandro, Cuba. He has been exhibiting his work since 1997, with solo and group exhibits throughout Cuba, Europe, and Boston, MA. Martinez's work has been shown at Casa Museo, Alejandro de Humboltd in Havana, Cuba in 2005 and at Staedtischen Museum in Traunstein, Germany in 2011.
