Descripción del Premio

The Peabody Essex Museum is pleased to announce the inaugural PEM Prize. Artists change the way we see the world and interact with one another. The PEM Prize will be given annually to artists from any field whose work explores the catalytic relationship between creativity and civic engagement. Reinvigorating and reimagining the communities in which we live, these artists are leaders, connecting us to the possibilities that exist for more inclusive and understanding societies. Along with a cash award, each PEM Prize recipient will work with the museum on a project to which all will be invited. PEM prize awardees will be individuals or groups who aim to deepen our global cultural connections, ignite our imaginations and inspire us into action. Save the Date of May 21, 2022 in the evening for the PEM Prize Celebration. This will be a special evening to come together and honor Carlos Garaicoa while raising funds for PEM. We ask that you support this effort, as you have our past annual fundraising Galas. Your gift will provide valuable funds for the inspiring programs, exhibitions, and education initiatives PEM offers each year, as well as support for the care and maintenance of our collections and facilities. Your support is deeply important, especially at this moment. Each dollar raised will further PEM’s mission and ensure we continue offering important innovative exhibitions, programs, events and education opportunities to everyone we serve. We are thrilled to welcome you, our PEM family across the globe, to celebrate with us. We invite you to support the Peabody Essex Museum's PEM Prize and play a critical part in the museum’s continued ability to thrive now and into the future. Join us for a full series of activities and events surrounding this project. LEARN MORE PEM Prize Honoree The inaugural PEM prize will honor artist Carlos Garaicoa. Drawing on his study of architecture, urbanism and history, Garaicoa creates multidisciplinary artworks that range across a wide range of cultural and political topics. Born in Havana in 1967, Carlos Garaicoa Manso lives and works in Havana and Madrid. The city of his birth has been an ongoing focus of his installations, videos, photography, sculpture, pop-up books, and drawings. In the tension between the utopian ideals and the lived reality of that storied city, Garaicoa continues to discover new creative and poetic possibilities. PEM is exhibiting Garaicoa’s extraordinary multisensory installation Partitura, which features street musicians, whose melodic and rhythmic expressions enliven cities around the world. Filming in Madrid and Bilbao, Garaicoa collaborated with some forty musicians, from the amateur to the virtuoso who perform in a diverse range of musical styles and genres. Weaving such dramatically distinct performances into a single uplifting installation Garaicoa embraces multiple traditions, cultures, and styles. Partitura celebrates our potential to create a powerful unity out of the great diversity of our communities.
