Descripción del Premio
Oscar Muñoz has been awarded the Overseas Higashikawa Photographer Award for his photographic achievements, recognizing especially the solo exhibition Protographies which was shown at the Jeu de Paume, Paris; Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia, Cali; Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), Buenos Aires; and Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, Bogotá between 2012 and 2014. Juror Michiko Kasahara writes, "Held in several museums including the Jeu de Paume in Paris, the exhibition Protographies presents a dynamic installation of themes of memories and disappearance [death] utilizing imagery of smoke and water."
Muñoz (b. 1951, Colombia) is known for his use of ephemeral materials, in poetic reflections upon memory, philosophy, and mortality. He lives and works in Cali, Colombia, where he established Lugar a dudas, a cultural center and residency program for artists. In 2013, he received the Prince Claus Award for "his highly original, profound and poetic artworks on the transitory nature of human existence, memory, and history..." His work is in numerous international collections, both public and private.
In its 32nd year, the Higashikawa Photography Award is sponsored by the city of Higashikawa in central Hokkaido, Japan. The award was established in 1985, and it is intended to "take a role in creating connections between photographic culture and the people of the world... we meet people from abroad and exchange with them. By doing so, we believe we can entrust prayer for peace and our dreams to the future generation." Each year, awards are made to one overseas photographer, one domestic photographer, one new photographer, one special photographer, and one photographer recognized for long-term achievement in photographing the Sanin area. This year's other awardees are: Taishi Hirokawa, Yoko Ikeda, Michael Kenna, and Yoshimi Ikemoto.
Muñoz was selected by a committee of eight jurors, including photographers, art critics, curators, and a novelist: Katsumi Asaba, Michiko Kasahara, Aki Kusumoto, Osamu Ueno, Kazuyoshi Nomachi, Keiichiro Hirano, Yuri Mitsuda, and Hiroshi Yamazaki. His work will be shown at the Higashikawa Bunka Gallery, as part of the award winners' exhibition, from July 30-August 31, 2016. The award ceremony will be July 30, with a panel discussion among the artists on July 31.
