Place can define one as an individual, citizen and human being. It elicits memories, coded from childhood or constructed over time and experience which become inseparable from our personhood. Using a variety of materials, the eleven international artists in Out of Place respond to specific environments in nature, architecture, and interior and exterior space in differing and unconventional ways. Their positions are rooted in traditional art making, yet go beyond. Their practices are shaped by implicit systems which define the work’s outcome. Their processes are time-based, cumulative and observational.
Ranging across mediums including collage, drawing, printmaking, digital photography, fiber and sculptural painting, the artists physically collect, cut, draw, weave, rub and pour to complete the work. Each considers the physical environment or a particular place as a conceptual tool to create art. They present a hands-on approach that is also connected to repetitive actions as they mine for the nuances of personal experience or expose the sharp points of political and collective histories.
Influenced by art history as well as the present, these contemporary artists both from the Deutsche Bank Collection and invited to exhibit here for the first time, view pattern, form, color, negative space and their interplay as part of subject matter and craft. While the artworks differ in medium and process, they all subvert expectations, stretching traditional format and materials in unique ways.
