Descripción de la Exposición
irst institutional exhibition in Europe, the show is the culmination of two years of research, resulting in a series of new sculptures and photo assemblages: in her complex and expressive work, Cerqueira Leite re-envisions the human body through acts of transformation. She does this through movement and gestures, in a subtle choreography between the force of the body and the materials it presses against.
The starting point of "Orogenesis" are the Calchi, plaster cast bodies excavated in Pompeii from the XIX century. The calchi show a contracted position that the human body assumes when exposed to intense heat, an involuntary pose forensically known as the 'pugilistic attitude'. Cerqueira Leite connects the position of the victims of Pompeii eruption to two other contexts belonging to contemporary culture. First, she refers to a keystone of Martha Graham’s technique for Modern dance: the 'contraction'. In addition, the sculptures and photographic work presented in Orogenesis connect these formal figurative references with the standard position of the free-floating body as described by NASA. The neutral body posture of a human in zero gravity is identical to the pose of Pompeii's Calchi and the modern dance 'contraction'.
