INDEX
of Art and Technology
12th to 22nd of May 2022
Braga, Portugal
SURFACE is the theme of the first edition of the new Portuguese biennial that will explore Art and Technology
OPEN CALL FOR ONLINE WORKS UNTIL 3 DECEMBER
Exploring artistic practices and critical thinking in which technology assumes a central role is what INDEX's first edition proposes.
After edition zero - that brought together, in 2019, artists and thinkers from different geographies and artistic territories meeting and sharing tech and science - INDEX will debut in 2022 as an international Biennial of Art and Technology. From 12th to 22nd May 2022, in various venues of the city of Braga and also online, an extensive programme of exhibitions, performances, conferences and workshops will be presented exploring the idea of "Surface".
With artistic direction by Luís Fernandes (programmer, musician and sound artist), assisted by Liliana Coutinho (curator and programmer) and Mariana Pestana (architect and curator), INDEX seeks to present a particular perspective on contemporary art and technology, exploring the Surface concept and placing it on a central level. Either as visual platforms or haptic entities, boundaries or interfaces, zones of emergence or extraction, Surfaces represent vital elements of both human and natural ecosystems. They also constitute powerful metaphors for artistic practices concerning technology, raising important issues that urgently need to be addressed.
Do we need to go deeper or should we stay in and explore the Surfaces?
It is in the context of this compelling question that the programme begins to develop itself with an Open Call for online works that aims to select and support artistic proposals at the intersection of Art and Technology with close affinities to the biennial’s central theme.
More than a mere transposition of conventional works for the virtual domain, INDEX challenges and encourages the submission of proposals that explore the possibilities and specificities of the online ecosystem, as a platform for the exhibition and creation of works of art.
The Open Call jury is formed by the biennial programmers and Philipp Ziegler, the current director of the Curatorship Department of ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.
The four selected projects are invited to join the online programme and will be awarded 2.500€ each.
Regulation and applications until December 3 2021, at www.indexmediaarts.com.
Quoting the artistic director Luís Fernandes, “as a Biennial of Art and Technology, INDEX does not intend to be just a celebration of the happy coexistence of these two domains. It also represents an opportunity to, from artistic practices in which technology assumes a structuring role, reflect about the world we live in and about the damage we have inflicted on it as a society. The Open Call that we are now launching aims to support works that relate to the idea of Surface, the theme of this new edition, and that are thought and designed, from scratch to the online domain”.
INDEX is part of the program of the city of Braga as a UNESCO Creative City for the Media Arts, a network created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The creation of dedicated Infrastructures, educational services and regular programming, exclusively designed within these domains, are part of the cities action plan in which INDEX is included.
From 12th to 22nd May 2022, in Braga (Portugal) and online, the 1st INDEX Biennial.
An initiative of Braga Media Arts supported by the Municipality of Braga, Theatro Circo and gnration.
