Program Description
This AiR is organized by CSL’s Fine Arts Department with the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
We want to challenge artists to create strategies in how to bring together people from neighboring communities, and how to be confronted with Carpintarias de São Lázaro, this new cultural space of contemporary creation. Thus, the leitmotiv of this AiR is the idea of and the reflection on the concept of community. What is ‘community’ and how is it set-up; how can we build a ‘community’ through contemporary art? Many of the neighboring communities and their cultures are based on narratives transmitted during generations, using “story telling” as a strategy to pass on knowledge of the world and of our collective history. Is there a possibility to use “story telling” as a strategy in contemporary art to create a collective memory of the Carpintarias neighborhood?
