Descripción de la Exposición For this project JMG/PP offer a diverse collection of sculptures and films made between 2006 and 2011. JMG/PP succeed in creating a significant artistic and intellectual journey achieving, as few others have in contemporary art, high levels of philosophical sophistication and reflection, through their films (in 16 and 35 mm), where their materialistic vision is the result of an intertwining of the codes of pataphysics, science and art. The artists' work invites us to think about the world by looking at the absurd, the burlesque or the magic, and recovering the primitive qualities of film's earliest years. As is customary in the modus operandi of JMG/PP, some of the most recent works in this exhibition were made during business trips, in this case to Catania, São Tomé and Principe. In the show there will also be new works, produced by the Marino Marini Foundation and Contemporary Arts Observatory by Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, as well as a sculpture, 'Spaghetti Tornado', produced with the support of the Brodbeck Foundation of Catania. An artistic duo based in Lisbon, João Maria Gusmão (1979) and Pedro Paiva (1977) have worked together since 2001, producing films, sculptures, installations and anthologies of texts. Gusmão and Paiva's films usually evoke scientific studies, set in minimal, barely identifiable or very dark environments. Strictly silent, their films, which the artists describe as the drafting of a 'philosophical poetic fiction', offer the viewer a variety of curious characters in scenarios that allude to the intellectual and esoteric texts. ?In tandem with their visual work, since 2005, they have been publishing the philosophical journal Eflúvio Magnético, which covers a wide range of different research areas and their work. João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva had solo exhibitions in many museums and contemporary art centers, including the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco, the Kunstverein in Hannover, the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, the Museu de Arte Contemporaneo Castilla y Leon, the Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm, and the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporanea, Lisbon.? They have participated in international events and exhibitions such as the Gwangju Biennale in 2010, Manifesta in 2008, the Biennale Mercolsul in Porto Alegre in 2007, and the Biennale of Sao Paulo in 2006. They represented Portugal with Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. They recently opened in September 2011 at the Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf and at Le Plateau, Paris. On the occasion of the project a book will be produced, published by Mousse Publishing, curated by Nuno Faria and Alberto Salvadori, supported by the Foundations Marino Marini, Florence; Brodbeck Foundation, Catania and the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze Observatory of Contemporary Arts.
