Descripción de la Exposición
Mishkin Gallery presents "Nicolás Guagnini: Theatre of the Self", an exhibition of video works documenting the multi-threaded performances of Buenos Aires-born, New York-based artist Nicolás Guagnini. This is the artist’s first New York solo exhibition, with many of the works included, which span from 2004 to 2019, being previously unseen. While Guagnini’s interdisciplinary practice is known to include painting, film, ceramics, and drawing, as well as writing and curating, less attention has been paid to the artist’s engagement with performance. The exhibition will open to the public from September 30 until December 10, 2021.
Earlier performances such as Tango 78 (2004) and Discharge (2005) were conceived to create an audience instead of addressing it, while later works, including Clear Allegiance (2012) and Ode to Joy (2014), incorporate both site and public, while encouraging a relationship between the reaction of the audience and the camera documenting the event. These works also engage both discursive and pre-verbal registers, as Guagnini has undergone different therapies (Freudian, Reichian, laughter yoga) to extend performance as a kind of treatment and remedy for the uneven histories that bridge his time in Latin America and the United States.
Raised in Argentina during its violent military dictatorship, Guagnini moved to New York in the late 1990s, co-founding the film production company Union Gaucha Productions with Karin Schneider in 1997. In 2005, Guagnini became co-founder of Orchard, an artist cooperative based on the Lower East Side. The work in Theatre of the Self is partly informed by this personal biography and through Guagnini’s artistic community. Each performance was produced in collaboration with artists who share his concerns around performance and the moving image, some of whom include Ei Arakawa, Leigh Ledare, Jeff Preiss, Aura Rosenberg, and Karin Schneider.
Nicolás Guagnini: Theatre of the Self is curated by Alaina Claire Feldman, Director and Curator of Mishkin Gallery. Accompanying the exhibition is the catalogue Nicolás Guagnini: Theatre of the Self, designed by Geoff Kaplan and published by Mishkin Gallery. It includes texts by Ei Arakawa, Alaina Claire Feldman, Aimé Iglesias Lukin, David Joselit, Pamela M. Lee, Dessane Lopez Cassell, Aura Rosenberg, and Karin Schneider.
