Descripción de la Exposición

This group show draws its title from a line in the poem “O Apanhador de Desperdícios” [The Catcher of Squandered Things] (2008) by Manoel de Barros, a writer from Mato Grosso. Recognized as one of Brazil's greatest poets, Manoel devoted countless works to contemplating life's minutiae and seemingly insignificant things, using them as a gateway to inhabit a different temporality – one that is slower and set apart from the contemporary rush. The poetic line Meu quintal é maior do que o mundo [My backyard is bigger than the world] emerges as a catalyst, gathering works that unfold different meanings of quintal [backyard] – that quintessential space of the Brazilian dwelling. Artists from different generations explore this space between home life and the wider world, opening up the quintal as a place to touch and work the earth, to look up at the stars, to think and let the mind wander. At the same time, other works explore how this space becomes a place for celebration and spiritual life, acting as a force that pulls together the most diverse communities. Like a frame around a landscape, the exhibition presents views from this everyday space through different perspectives and media, showing us fresh ways to see this very commonplace setting. The exhibition features works by Albano Afonso, Amorí, Ana Paula Sirino, Andy Villela, David Almeida, Diego Mouro, Eduardo Berliner, Fernanda Galvão, Heitor dos Prazeres, Leticia Lopes, Lucas Simões, Luiza Gottschalk, Marina Hachem, Mauricio Adinolfi, Mauricio Parra, Mauro Restiffe, Paula Scavazzini, Rafael Chavez, Sandra Cinto, Vânia Mignone, Yohana Oizumi, Zé Carlos Garcia, and Zé Tepedino.   The Catcher of Squandered Things I use words to compose my silences. I don’t like words weary from informing. I give more respect to those that live with their belly on the ground like water stone toad. I understand well the accent of the waters. I respect insignificant things and insignificant beings. I value insects more than airplanes. I value the speed of turtles more than that of missiles. This slowness has been in me since the cradle. I was prewired to love small birds. I overflow with joy because of this. My backyard is bigger than the world. I am a catcher of squandered things: I love the leftovers like good flies do. I wish my voice had the shape of song. Because I don't belong to information technology: I belong to inventionology. I only use words to compose my silences. Manoel de Barros
