Descripción de la Exposición
From the nineteenth of May to the twenty-first of July, Rialto6 in Conde Redondo, near the cop shop, will show a sumptuous exhibition of paintings by Mattia Denise. “Pau-podre”, meaning Rotten Wood, is what it’s called and that’s what it’s about, plus a miscellany of other things.
Born in nineteen hundred and seventy-seven in the burgh of Blois, in France, Denise fled to Lisbon for three reasons: love, weather and money. While he found the first two on the western shores of Lusitania, the brass, as no surprise to most Portuguese, failed to materialise… but then again, his art is about the tragedy of existence, after all!
Over the years, Denise has devoted himself to the matter of the spirit in general, the spirit in particular and the spirit in absolute – which if not a thing, he’d have to invent and see what it was good for. A stevedore of metaphysical works and a pioneer of the aesthetics of obsolescence, the memory of humankind blows through him like a touching breeze of revolutionary hope, something like: either all of it for all of us or nowt for none – no compromise and nothing in-between.
After presenting Lisboans with a stunning exhibition of drawings last year, the artist now intends to regale us with the most acclaimed of the fine arts. Yes, Ladies and Gents, just paintings! The show is also accompanied by a limited edition of an encyclopaedia by the artist – a bit of a trifle they say – and a magical potion that’s an elixir of malt, a medically distilled ointment best served chilled. Come see the paintings and try our syrup, pure or with tonic! Anyone who says you shouldn’t drown your sorrows knows nothing of human pain. An apocalyptic and sentimental exhibition of art! Pastoral forever and, one hopes, till the end of time.
