Descripción de la Exposición
Monitor is pleased to announce the opening of Matematiche Notturne by Thomas Braida. After having included his work in three group shows at our gallery in Lisbon (Pequenas Notas Sobre Figuração in 2020, Tracing The Infrathin in 2022, and HOUSEWARMING in 2023), we are now thrilled to present his first solo exhibition in Portugal.
Thomas Braida (Gorizia, 1982) is an Italian artist who lives and works in Venice. Throughout his career as a figurative painter, Braida has been constantly creating eclectic works in which the domains of fantasy, mythology, history, and politics coexist in unpredictable and often humorous ways.
The exhibition Matematiche Notturne will include a body of new paintings and drawings, together with a group of ceramic sculptures produced during his residency at Oficinas do Convento in April 2023. The exhibition will be accompanied by a text by Alberta Romano.
“To contrast or bring mathematics closer to painting seemed to me to be a personal duty, for unlike many, studying mathematics has served me well in life. They are simply part of the same mechanism, inside my brain and therefore in my thinking and reasoning. Moreover, the night is the most prolific time for me to paint, the best ideas come directly from the subconscious at night. These dozen or so works are only a small representation, a window on a long artistic journey, and their heterogeneity is a distinctive feature of my work. The paintings range between personal stories, fragments of humanity, stolen dreams, hushed confessions, poignant tangible sadness, in a whirlwind of imaginative temporal leaps.” Thomas Braida
