Living in a time when it seems we are about to enter the untraveled, it’s easy to look up at the stars and wonder what else exists, and hope that it is as sweet, colorful, and ever so slightly complex as all of our dreams. For Fanny Brodar, painting is like entering this unplumbed place; it is a euphoric tapestry woven together by memories from childhood, the precious moments in present-day, and the enigma of places like Mars. Bright colors, childish marks, and scribbled words invite the viewer to delve deeper into their own imaginations and question what is real and what is make believe.
Fanny Brodar paints vivid and energetic spaces that spark hope, imagination and remembrances. Her Martian-like characters evolved from an imaginary friend from childhood that helped her navigate and overcome many difficult times as a child. The artist’s paintings lure the viewer into entering this pictured domain — an otherworldly and magical place, like her childhood bedroom that became whatever she wanted simply by thinking it up. She builds on the nostalgic associations of the audience, presenting monsters that resemble familiar characters from childhood, favorite films, and fashion. Swirling into the painted world of Fanny Brodar, it is hard to leave once there.
