Descripción de la Exposición
Mendes Wood DM New York presents Mantiqueira, Patricia Leite's most significant exhibition in the United States to date. The exhibition opens July 14, 2022 and will be on view at the gallery's Tribeca location through August 12, 2022. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, July 14th from 6-8pm.
Staged across the gallery's two floors, Mantiqueira, presents new works from the studio alongside historical works from 1981-1990, presenting a comprehensive overview of the artist's practice to date. The presence of these historical works track Leite's early explorations with total abstraction, laying the foundation for her later explorations rooted in landscape.
Her new works vibrate between figuration and abstraction; bucolic scenes from trips or images extracted from videos trigger a process towards painting that comes into focus here. Working on solid wood panels, she uses large blocks of color to place the viewer in front of imposing planes; everything that is there cannot be fully, let alone definitively, defined. Rather, there is an opening of light that outlines everything, leaving room to witness its constant transformations across the surface plane. Points of contact emerge; shapes take familiar form, and we are reminded once again of the fleeting beauty of nature's presence.
Patricia Leite (b. Belo Horizonte, 1955) lives and works in São Paulo.
