Descripción de la Exposición

Northern Ireland's leading arts venue, the MAC, has launched 'MAC International 2016' - the biggest contemporary art prize in Ireland and one of the most significant prizes in the UK. The award offers professional artists across the world the opportunity to exhibit at the MAC, as well as a prize fund of £20,000 sponsored by Ulster Bank for the overall winner. An international judging panel including Katerina Gregos Art Historian, Curator, and Writer from Brussels and Marta Dziewańska from the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw today announced the shortlist of the 18 artists who have successfully made it through the open submission. The call for entrants attracted almost 1,000 submissions from some 40 countries across the world. An exhibition, running across all three MAC galleries from 27 October 2016 until 19 February 2017, will showcase the work of all finalists and offer visitors the very best in contemporary visual art including painting, photography, film and installation. The shortlisted artists from countries including Brazil, Iceland, France, the US, the UK and Northern Ireland, now have three months to prepare their artworks for the upcoming exhibition which will be judged by a jury of international curators. The winner of the £20,000 MAC International Ulster Bank prize will be announced at the opening ceremony on 27 October 2016. Hugh Mulholland, Senior Curator at the MAC and MAC International judge said: "MAC International has quickly positioned itself as an important international platform for artists, as well as a must see exhibition with our visitors. The exhibition and the significant Ulster Bank prize on offer to an individual artist is a demonstration of the MAC's continued commitment to supporting ambitious and challenging work within contemporary visual art practice. "The calibre of the judging panel adds significant weight to the exhibition's international credentials. Together with Katerina and Marta we had a very difficult job of selecting just 18 artists from such high quality submissions." Sean Murphy, Managing Director of Branch and Private Banking, Ulster Bank, said: "MAC International enhances Belfast's reputation on the global stage, and brings world-class work to a local audience - inspiring up-and-coming talent, widening access to the arts, and enriching our cultural fabric. Ulster Bank is really pleased to support this important prize and to help bring the exhibition free of charge to people from across Northern Ireland." Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added: "As principal funder of the MAC, we are delighted to lend our support to MAC International. This project puts the pursuit of excellence in the arts to the fore and in particular, reminds us of the important role of Artists in producing great work that attracts audiences from home and abroad. MAC International is helping to build a valuable reputation for Belfast, and indeed Northern Ireland, as a place of note for international contemporary art practice. It is a great addition to our cultural treasure trove of attractions worth visiting Belfast to see and experience. I would encourage everyone to go along; it offers a terrific opportunity for people to engage with high-quality art and culture of an international standard." Tourism Northern Ireland has funded MAC International as part of its Event Funding Programme since 2014. Aine Kearney, Director of Business Support & Events, Tourism Northern Ireland, said: "With 38% of overnight visitors to Northern Ireland participating in cultural activities in 2015, MAC International presents a unique interest opportunity for national and international visitors. Following on from the success of last year's event, we welcome MAC International's commitment to showcasing the best of contemporary visual art and providing a very attractive cultural offering for all to experience and enjoy." Judge Katerina Gregos (Art Historian, Curator, and Writer from Brussels) said: "I am delighted to be part of the jury of this significant prize for contemporary art which provides a wonderful opportunity for international artists to showcase their work through an important exhibition in the magnificent spaces of the MAC, undoubtedly Belfast's leading art space. Since its establishment in 2014, the MAC International has already become one of the exhibitions to spot exciting artists from different generations and geographies." Fellow judge Marta Dziewańska (Curator and Writer, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw) added: "MAC International is an extraordinary opportunity for artists: the economic reason is always tempting, but I guess the context of the city of Belfast and its turbulent history is even more so. Being a part of the jury this year for me offers both challenge and adventure: it will not only inform my own practice, but will hopefully help me to grasp and understand this loaded and truly fascinating city." The shortlisted artists for 2016 are: • Jasmina Cibic - Ljubljana, Slovenia • Ismar Cirkinagic - Copenhagen, Denmark • Teresa Cos - London, UK • Angel de la Rubia - Brussels, Belgium • Wojtek Doroszuk - Rouen, France • Mariah Garnett - Los Angeles, USA • Joy Gerrard - London, UK • Núria Güell - Barcelona, Spain • Halloubi Hamza - Amsterdam, Netherlands • Darren Harvey-Regan - London, UK • Frederic Huska - Belfast, UK • Rósa Sigrún Jónsdóttir - Reykjavik, Iceland • Ana Mendes - London, UK • Tom Molloy - Notre Dame de Bondeville, France • Henrique Neves h - Lisbon, Portugal • Beto Shwafaty - Sao Paulo, Brazil • Emma Talbot - London, UK • Nikolas Ventourakis - London, UK
