Descripción de la Exposición
Relations between artists' films and videos, on the one hand, and conventional cinema, on the other, take place on a number of dimensions. They are united by mobile and porous links that simultaneously seem to unite and separate both sectors from each other. The title Faraway, So Close! is an appropriation of German director Wim Wenders' 1993 film, and it refers to the distance and proximity of artistic practices that are separated by cultural and market reasons despite the fact that they share a common medium.
Moving images produced by the field of art, for the field of art, have historically been separated from conventional filmmaking. Even though they both use similar technical resources, they are circulated in different venues (film theatres vs. screens, showcases and black box exhibition rooms), and this has in turn encouraged different behaviours in audiences, as well as cultural industries with diametrically opposed commercial developments. Nevertheless, nowadays, a number of artists and filmmakers-as well as other figures involved in the art world, such as institutions and curators- have begun to venture beyond the boundaries that separate the two fields, placing this question at the heart of their research. This, in turn, has contributed to challenging the boundaries that delimit them.
The LOOP Festival 2016 is structured around two central themes. "Beyond the black box" is a series of curated exhibitions and programmes that challenge the traditional logic of the "black box", delving into the tensions between the bi-dimensionality of projections, filming devices as a nexus between space and time, and performance practices that activate images in movement. Conversely, "Back to the black box" is intended as a series of projects that seek to highlight the expositional, communicative and dialogical qualities of cinematographic spaces, emphasising the state of aesthetic experience and contemplative immersion fostered by the "black box".
As a platform attentive to the most urgent debates within the moving image industry, LOOP Barcelona 2016 wants to explore the hybrid zone between cinema and artist films and videos. Through its different components-the Fair, the Festival and the Studies programme-LOOP will foster reflection on the shared history of these practices, their economies, their institutions and their languages.
